GSMA Backs Integrated Mobile Broadcast

Ainsley Jones

The GSM Association has endorsed a new 3GPP standard, Integrated Mobile Broadcast (IMB), that the standards body hopes will enable a quicker uptake of global mobile data and broadcast services. According to the group, IMB provides spectrally efficient delivery of broadcast services based on techniques aligned with FDD WCDMA but that also allow for deployment in TDD spectrum, reports FierceMobileContent.

Potential applications of the standard include delivery of audio and video multimedia and application data without affecting the unicast network, according to EE Times UK. The GSMA plans to promote the newly endorsed standard along with vendors Orange, SingTel, Softbank, Telstra, T-Mobile and Vodafone.
