Google announced the next version of its Android operating system, codenamed Ice Cream Sandwich, at its I/O keynote today. Ice Cream Sandwich will be all open source and will merge the smartphone and tablet versions of the Android OS, Mashable reports. Google's goal of delivering one operating system that works everywhere, regardless of device should ease Android fragmentation issues for developers.

Ice Cream Sandwich will begin rolling out in the fourth quarter of this year. In the meantime, Google also announced Android 3.1, which is being rolled out to Verizon-branded Motorola XOOMs today. Android 3.1 brings a refined user-interface, a movie rental service and the ability to plug in USB devices, according to CNET News. The updated OS will also soon make its way to Google TV devices.
