Cisco Expects Video to Drive Mobile Data Consumption

Ainsley Jones

Cisco is predicting that mobile data traffic volume will increase 131 percent by 2013. That's according to the company's Visual Networking Index Mobile Forecast for 2008-2013. Search Engine Watch reports that Cisco expects 64 percent of mobile traffic in 2013 to be driven by mobile video.

Cisco forecasts that monthly traffic volume will reach 500,000 terabytes by 2011, double in 2012, and then double again in 2013, according to an Unstrung piece. A key driver of the increase will be wireless broadband-enabled laptops and handsets capable of achieving speeds faster than 3G, says Cisco.

In addition, the company anticipates that in 2013, European mobile users will consume twice as much data a month than their U.S. counterparts. The company expects Europeans to edge Americans in data consumption on laptops as well, says this PC World article.
