China Unicom iPhone Sales Challenged by High Prices, Lack of Wi-Fi

Posted by Ainsley Jones Oct 30, 2009 1:27:54 PM

Apple's iPhone has gotten off to a bit of a slow start in China today. Rain and cool temperatures have been attributed to a less than full outdoor sales queue at a shopping mall. Slow sales of the iPhone can't all be blamed on nature though, says PCWorld.com.

China Unicom is selling the 32BG iPhone 3G S with no contract, the most popular way for people to purchase phones in mainland China, for the equivalent of $1,026. Consumers can get a cracked gray-market iPhone for $587 at many local electronics markets. In addition, the China Unicom iPhone does not come with the Wi-Fi chipset that enable the user to connect to high-speed local networks. The Wi-Fi function was removed to comply with Chinese government regulations, reports The Wall Street Journal. Gray-market iPhones come with Wi-Fi.
