Analyst: Verizon iPhone Likely in 2010

Posted by Ainsley Jones Oct 29, 2009 1:38:20 PM

Wall Street analyst Brian Marshall says Verizon can enjoy both the sweet indulgence of Google Android-based phones and still have room for a bite of Apple's ridiculously popular iPhone, InfoWorld reports. In a research note to clients, Marshall said:

AT&T’s ’sweetheart’ carrier subsidy (~$450) for the iPhone would not be attainable at Verizon. [But] diverse carrier support is a key element in driving global penetration of the iPhone. We believe the chances are high the iPhone will find its way onto the Verizon network in the second half of 2010.

Marshall suspects a deal with Verizon will net the Cupertino, Calif.-based outfit around $300 per smartphone. Given Verizon's subscriber base, that will put more money in Apple's already deep pockets, not less. Marshall added:

Everyone is dissatisfied with AT&T on the iPhone, not only on voice, but data as well, especially in congested cities like New York and San Francisco. If Verizon starts selling the iPhone, AT&T is going to have an issue on their hands.

So while the makers of the iDon't Care ad that spoofs Verizon's iDon't ad aren't interested in an Android phone, they may be interested in having an iPhone on what is believed to be a more reliable celluar network.
