Yahoo Donates Traffic Server Code to Apache

Posted by Ainsley Jones Nov 3, 2009 10:34:23 AM

Yahoo has donated its Traffic Server software to the Apache Software Foundation as open source and will launch an open source version of its Traffic Server next Monday, says bigmouthmedia. Yahoo uses the Web server to serve around 400 TB of data a day on its network and says it can handle more than 35,000 requests per second.

The company will unveil the technology at next week's Cloud Computing Conference & Expo in Santa Clara, Calif. The code is available now from Apache's incubator. While the likes of Google and Microsoft might not need it, new, fast-growing sites could make good use of the technology, says ZDNet's Dana Blankenhorn.
