Windows 7 Selling Better than Vista, But Moving Fewer PCs

Posted by Ainsley Jones Nov 6, 2009 2:00:14 PM

Windows 7 has gotten off to a strong start in sales and market share, according to Daily Tech. According to NPD Group, boxed unit sales for Windows 7 during the first week of availability were up 234 percent compared to those of Windows Vista.

Ian Paul at PCWorld.com questions the success of Windows 7, though. Despite strong sales for the operating system, the average selling price of Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade was $76, compared with $160 for its predecessor, Windows Vista Home Premium. In addition, PC sales are down 6 percent compared to Vista's launch period.

Microsoft's dominance of the OS market is still not in question, but growth from Apple's Mac OS X and various Linux distributions show it's certainly a more competitive marketplace.

One of the biggest challenges that end users are facing is their hardware is powerful enough to run Windows 7 however many of their system devices are not supported by W7 because the manufacturers are not supporting older or legacy hardware with drivers.  People are then faced with a semi-working W7 system or need to purchase new PC or new components.
