Toshiba Aiming for Enterprise with 3.5-Inch Drives

Posted by Ainsley Jones Nov 19, 2009 11:07:31 AM

At a press event in London yesterday, Toshiba announced its plans to enter the high-capacity enterprise 3.5-inch hard-disk drive market. The development comes on the heels of the completion of Toshiba's acquisition of Fujitsu's HDD business, Channel Register reports. Toshiba looks to use the Fujitsu HDD portfolio to expand its enterprise drive offerings, with a 3.5-inch 7200 rpm drive with both SATA and SAS interfaces being considered.

Hexus.net came away unimpressed with the announcement. While Toshiba's Fujitsu acquisition gives it increased access to the enterprise market, the folks at Hexus call 3.5-inch drives old hat and believe Toshiba would be better served going after the enterprise with solid-state drives.
