Intel to Propose Microserver Standard Before Year's End

Posted by Ainsley Jones Oct 30, 2009 1:08:18 PM

Intel is readying a new standard for microservers, based on the company's prototype targeted at low-traffic Web sites. Intel plans to present its design specifications at the Server System Infrastructure Forum before the end of 2009, reports International Business Times.

Intel's prototype has a 1.86Ghz quad-core Lynnfield processor paired with four memory slots. The processor draws just 45 watts of power, but it will be replaced in 2010 by a dual-core Clarkdale requiring 30 watts. Intel's Jason Waxman believes the servers will appeal to Web hosting companies that need a good deal of servers for low-traffic Web sites, says CNET News.
