IBM Expands Focus on Cloud Computing

Posted by Ainsley Jones Dec 10, 2009 2:16:34 PM

IBM announced that it has opened a new research lab in Hong Kong that will be dedicated to developing products and services for the cloud computing market. The lab is an expansion of the IBM China Development Laboratory that already employs 5,000 developers, reports InformationWeek.

Initially, the facility will support IBM's online LotusLive offering, of which there are more than 18 million users. IBM estimates the cloud computing market is growing 28 percent annually and will increase from $47 billion in 2008 to $126 billion in 2012.

Big Blue also broke ground on a new data center in Auckland, New Zealand. The 56,000-square-foot facility, which will be operational in late 2010, will support cloud computing on behalf of IBM's subscribers, according to The Register.
