Cisco to Shakeup Server Market with Project California

Posted by Ainsley Jones Mar 16, 2009 1:03:20 PM

Cisco is expected to unveil Project California later today. It is believed Cisco will make public a new blade server unit that includes the company's networking technology, reports TG Daily. The company will make the announcement during a 1:30 p.m. webcast today.

BusinessWeek suggests that Cisco's blade server approach would be a welcome one since it would allow companies to decrease their costs in terms of hardware, power and IT staffing. The company's move stands to shake up the very structure of the server marketplace.

In integrating network, storage and computing traffic, Cisco places itself in competition with the likes of IBM, Sun, Dell and its long-time partner HP. The company's new platform is also expected to boost its virtualization profile, says TheStreet.com.

According to InformationWeek, Project California has already received a ringing endorsement from a Cisco partner. BMC Software CEO Bob Beauchamp has compared the yet to be unveiled device to the iPhone in terms of its ability to revolutionize the server industry.

If Cisco has developed a server that cuts layer out of the OSI. They will take over the market.  This would be great.  The technology service industry is really bad right now.  If Cisco is able to link up with a global service provider like Unisys, they have a very good chance at taking over the Server market.

OSI? What does TCP/IP have to do with servers? This will fail. SAN is still cheaper, and provides more functionality. I can still buy a 48 gig server, SAN storage, and switching for less with more functionality.  Features like replication, cloning, snapshots, WORM locking, and on the fly sizing of volumes cant be trivialized. If you can't do that stuff, you cant use all your storage. I appreciate what they are trying, but unless they buy EMC or Netapp, this wont work for really big businesses. EMC is a partner, do you think they would work with CISCO if they thought they could compete in SAN? It took storage vendors YEARS to get their products where they are. CISCO is not going to reinvent storage overnight.

BTW. Unisys is almost out of business. Check their stock price.

I doubt they wil be working with anyone soon.
