Apple Changes Tune About Safari 'Carpet Bomb'

Posted by Kara Reeder Jun 20, 2008 9:40:10 AM

It looks like Apple has decided to fix the carpet bombing bug in Safari for Windows after all. Computerworld reports that Safari 3.1.2 patches four vulnerabilities, including two that caused Microsoft to urge Windows users to swear off the Web browser.

Last month, Microsoft issued a security advisory about a blended threat discovered by security researcher Nitesh Dhanjani. But Apple said it did not consider the problem a security issue. StopBadware.org encouraged Apple to reconsider, but Apple seemed to be sticking to its guns ... until now.

The default download location has been changed in Safari 3.1.2, according to The Washington Post. Instead of going to the Windows desktop, files are sent to the user's Downloads folder in Windows Vista and stashed in the Documents folder on Windows XP. Also, the user is now notified before downloading a file.

The Tech Herald discusses the other issues the update addresses, including a memory corruption vulnerability and problems connected with GIF and BMP image files.
