AMD launched its Magny-Cours Opteron 6100 processors today. The move comes a couple of weeks after Intel's Xeon 5600 processor launch. The platform features the world's first 8- and 12-core x86 server processors for the high-volume 2P and value 4P server market.
According to TG Daily, the Magny-Cours will allow AMD to split the server market into two segments: performance and cost efficiency. Acer, which ranks second globally in PC sales, will back AMD by equipping its 6000 series servers with Magny-Cours-based Opteron processors. Acer believes the switch will enable it to garner a price advantage over its competitors, says The Inquirer.
