Texas Pulls Voter Registration Systems from IBM Contract

Posted by Kara Reeder Nov 5, 2009 10:16:51 AM

The Texas Secretary of State's office has decided to pull the plug on its voter registration systems in ongoing $863 million data center IBM consolidation project, citing data security and disaster recoverability fears, reports Computerworld.

An incident in August when a server managed by IBM crashed causing a 13-day outage of the office's business records filing system sparked the decision. The Secretary of State's office said the incident exposed weakness in IBM's ability to recover lost data. The state's Department of Information Resources will now set up its own data center with two separate back-up locations.

Though the state has touted the money saved through its contract with IBM, these data-recovery problems have come up before.
