Senator Wants Cyber Security Chief in DHS, Not White House

Posted by Kara Reeder Nov 4, 2009 10:34:45 AM

The debate still continues on where the new cyber security czar should be housed.

Now Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, the ranking member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, is weighing in. According to Computerword, she says the leadership would be better placed in the Department of Homeland Security, not the White House.

[An office] anchored at DHS, with a strong and empowered leader would close the coordination gaps that currently exist in our disjointed federal efforts.

Collins says putting "a few staff crammed into a cubicle in the depths of the White House" would make it harder for Congress to oversee policies and budgets.

However, there has yet to be a cyber czar named. As IT Business Edge blogger Lora Bentley points out it has been five long months since the announcement of the position.
