As the first phase of access, registry firm Telnic is putting .tel domain names up for sale today, reports BBC News.
These domains will not be used as a hook on which to hang Web sites. Instead, .tel domains will be populated with details about how owners can be contacted. The domain can contain as much or as little information as the owner wishes to share, including phone numbers, e-mail addresses, GPS data or buttons that kick off a Skype call.
According to vnunet.com, .tel will allow owners to publish contact data in real time, which can be viewed on any device and only by those given permission to do so.
The second phase of access begins on Feb. 3, 2009 and will sell domains at a premium, with the third phase making access generally available on March 24, 2009.
