It's Official: FCC to Draft Net Neutrality Rules

Posted by Kara Reeder Oct 23, 2009 8:51:19 AM

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the Federal Communications Commission voted unanimously on Thursday to draft new net neutrality rules. The new rules will specifically extend regulations to mobile access providers, which is why AT&T is vehemently opposed to the changes. The commission is seeking public comment on the proposals.

Even though Silicon Valley giants like Google and Facebook support the proposals , instituting new regulations will be an uphill battle, notes The Washington Post. While the Democratic commissioners are all for new rules, the Republicans don't think they will be needed. The FCC also will likely end up facing a barrage of legal battles as telecommunications companies try to prevent the new rules from being enacted.
