Indian Portal Sues Google

Susan Hall

An Indian portal company, Consim Info, is suing Google, alleging its search engine drives business to competitors, reports PCWorld.com.

Consim Info runs a series of matrimonial portals, including BharatMatrimony.com. The company is complaining because when a person searches for its site on Google, competitors' ads come up with the results. It objects to Google using its trademarks as keywords in its bidding process and its trademarks being used to links from competitors. It's also demanding that no competitors' ads appear when people search using similar terms -- for instance typing Bharat Matrimony rather than BharatMatrimony.

According to the Business Standard, Consim Info is seeking a permanent injunction against the practices.

The suit brings to mind similar litigation Google has faced in the United States and in Australia.
