ICANN Considers First Submissions for International Domains

Kara Reeder

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers is considering the first submissions for Internationalized Domain Names using a non-Latin alphabet, internetnews.com reports. Tina Dam, senior director of IDNs at ICANN, says the organization has received 16 applications that spread across six different languages.

There are concerns that the new IDNs could present security risks. To help mitigate those risks, ICANN says scripts cannot be mixed. In addition, IDNs are only being given out to domains that have government support.
