FCC to Take Look at Special Access Fees

Posted by Kara Reeder Nov 9, 2009 11:40:16 AM

The Federal Communications Commission is slated to examine the issue of telephone access fees, reports InformationWeek.

Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile, and BT have alleged that AT&T and Verizon charge too much in special access fees to backhaul their customers' voice and data traffic. AT&T and Verizon maintain that:

current rules are working as intended and contend there is extensive actual and potential competition in the market.

Even though AT&T and Verizon have argued that the FCC hasn't had proper data to determine whether the market is weighted in their favor, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit sent the case back to the FCC.
