FCC Rules Ban Exclusive Cable Contracts for Apartment Buildings

Posted by Susan Hall Oct 31, 2007 4:51:55 PM

The Federal Communications Commission on Wednesday adopted new rules that prohibit cable operators from striking exclusive contracts with apartment building owners that lock residents into only one TV provider, reports News.com.

Satellite TV companies and smaller private cable operators, however, are not covered in the exclusivity rules.

Some states have opposed the widely anticipated FCC rules, according to a Dow Jones story on CNNMoney.com. They argue that 18 states have already banned the exclusive contracts, and there is no need for the federal government to intervene.
