FBI to Wikipedia: Remove Our Seal

Kara Reeder

CNET News reports that the Federal Bureau of Investigations is demanding that Wikipedia take down the FBI's official seal in an article about the agency because it had not approved use of the image.

The agency believes that Wikipedia violated the law by not seeking permission to use the seal and has threatened legal action. Wikimedia Foundation, which owns Wikipedia, questions the FBI's interpretation of the law. The nonprofit believes the law is meant to prevent people or organizations from using the seal to impersonate the FBI or for commercial use. InformationWeek offers Wikimedia lawyer Mike Goodwin's response:

While we appreciate your desire to revise the statute to reflect your expansive vision of it, the fact is that we must work with the actual language of the statute, not the aspirational version of Section 701 that you forwarded to us.
