EU Green Lights ePrivacy Directive

Posted by Kara Reeder Nov 10, 2009 10:16:42 AM

The European Union says all that's left for formal adoption of its ePrivacy Directive are just formalities, reports V3.co.uk.

The directive will pave the way for stronger rules concerning data breaches and other privacy issues. Under the new rules, ISPs will be required to notify individuals of security breaches. Other rules specify how and when cookies are installed on user machines and provide the right to bring legal action against spammers.

Resolution of the "formalities" are expected to take just a few weeks. Adoption will be required by member states within 18 months.
