EU Drops Antitrust Probe Against Qualcomm

Posted by Kara Reeder Nov 24, 2009 9:52:54 AM

According to Computerworld, the European Union has dropped its antitrust investigation into Qualcomm's patent-licensing practices after Ericsson and others withdrew their complaints.

In 2005, Ericsson, together with Nokia, Broadcom, Panasonic, NEC and Texas Instruments accused Qualcomm of charging too much to use its patents on technology necessary for Europe's 3G mobile phone standard.

One reason Ericsson withdrew its complaint is because of the success it had in South Korea. Another reason is that continuing was just too expensive. Ericsson spokeswoman Nina Macpherson says the company has "decided to spend [its] resources otherwise."
