The European Union is cracking down on Web sites that offer free ringtones and other goodies, reports BBC News.
Eighty percent of the more than 500 Web sites studied provide information that's unclear or misleading, leading to "costly surprises" for consumers, according to EU Consumer Affairs Commissioner Meglena Kuneva.
She criticized the sites for hiding the true cost of downloads and for failing to tell customers they were signing up for subscriptions, reports vnunet.com.
The sites offering ringtones or phone wallpaper are available throughout the EU and mostly target young users, she said. Investigators are following up on 466 complaints and could fine the sites or close them down.
