Survey Says Green IT Is Key in Reducing Emissions and Energy Consumption

Posted by Ainsley Jones Jun 24, 2008 8:12:32 AM

According to a recent report, IT departments can play a vital role in reducing energy consumption and emissions. Smart 2020, released by the Climate Group and the Global e-Sustainability Initiative, states that changes in the use of IT and communications in the enterprise could see a 15 percent reduction in global emissions by 2020. This would result in energy savings of approximately $787 billion.

The report also provides a number of suggestions IT departments can utilize. Alternative strategies include the implementation of smart motor systems, industrial automation, smart building design and smarter electricity grids, reports SiliconRepublic.com.

Some companies already doing their part were revealed in the first GreenFactor study. According to this GreenerComputing article, more than 70 percent of respondents said they would probably or definitely increase their preference for buying green if it would benefit their business. No single company can be considered the clear cut leader as Apple, HP, Microsoft, IBM, Intel, Sony and Dell are in a virtual seven-way tie for first place. Google, Nokia and Toshiba round out the top 10 and are well within striking distance of the leaders.
