House Passes Two Bills Said to Boost Innovation, Competitiveness

Posted by Michael Lindenberger Apr 26, 2007 11:27:25 AM

The U.S. House has passed two bills that tech lobbyists say should enhance competitiveness in the U.S., reports InformationWeek.

One would "expand scholarships, stipends and training for science, technology and engineering teachers' workshops and master's degree programs," according to the report. The second bill would establish grant programs under the auspices of the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy.

If the bills pass the Senate and are signed into law, they would give new researchers at least $80,000 a year for five years and establish a new Presidential Innovation Award for science and engineering, among other steps.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called the bills part of the House's efforts to restore American innovation and competitiveness.
