Can Entrepreneurship be Taught?

Posted by Susan Hall Nov 6, 2009 12:05:40 PM

In a BusinessWeek article, writer Reena Jana asks whether entrepreneurship can be taught, pointing to a survey on the topic commissioned by the Small Business Administration.

Findings from the study of 5,618 respondents finishing or holding business degrees from five Northeast U.S. schools:

  • 39 percent of those who founded a company had studied entrepreneurship; 26 percent had not.
  • 86 percent of those who said their companies offered new products had studied entrepreneurship; 18 percent had not.
  • 75 percent of those who held patents or copyrights had studied entrepreneurship; 10 percent had not.
  • 62 percent of those who said their companies use new production techniques had studied entrepreneurship; 28 percent had not.

The study authors say it's hard to say whether people involved with startups are more likely to seek out classes on entrepreneurship. They acknowledge, though, that those people might be more likely to complete the survey.
