What's Your Policy on Wireless Networking?

Posted by Susan Hall Feb 25, 2010 4:19:52 PM

Despite the proliferation of mobile and wireless devices used for business, few companies have a plan to adequately manage them, wrote IT Business Edge's Carl Weinschenk last September. He refers to "letting employees run around the town – or the globe -- subscribed to expensive rate plans and using devices packed with sensitive corporate information."

He quoted Dean Alms, vice president of strategy for Visage Mobile, saying:

A lot of companies, for a lot of different reasons, have not gone down the path of actually creating a mobility or wireless policy. It’s surprising how few have put pen to paper.

If you're ready to put that pen to paper to create a policy -- though it likely would be in digital form -- you can look to the Knowledge Network for help. The latest policy from Indiana University's Information Technology Services sets out its policy on wireless networking. You'll also find there the wireless security access policy from Info-Tech Research Group and a document from US-CERT on using wireless technology securely.

Look for other Indiana University policy documents in the Knowledge Network:

policy on the use of devices that can extend the university network.

appropriate use of information technology resources.

misuse and abuse of information technology resources.
