Unifying Data Storage

One of the primary issues that IT organizations have with storage is that there are far too many products involved to deal with, for example, everything from backup and recovery, archiving, cloud storage, chargeback and e-discovery.

 

IT organizations are looking for a simple, unified approach to dealing with all these tasks. To that end, dataglobal, a provider of storage-resource-management software, today launched a unified approach to data management.

 


The dataglobal approach, which combines the acquisition of archiving software from Inboxx with the company's storage-resource-management software that helps identify the real cost of storage, illustrates a fundamental shift taking place in the way storage is managed.

 

As noted by Bernd Hoeck, vice president of marketing for dataglobal, it's no longer enough to be able to simply tier data. You have to be able to dynamically identify what it really costs to store a particular piece of data in any given tier or storage.


The unified storage announcement from dataglobal is the latest among others from companies such as CommVault and Hitachi Data Systems. While IT organizations have saved massive amounts of money on servers through adoption of virtualization, storage costs have remained stubbornly high. And while the cost of a terabyte of storage continues to fall, the inefficient use of storage coupled with a massive increase in the amount of data that needs to be managed conspire to send storage costs higher.



As a result, interest in storage management software in particular and IT automation in general is on the rise.


It may be too early to say what impact these technologies will have on storage costs. But one thing that is certain, IT organizations can no longer afford to take a laissez faire approach to storage management.

As with any integrated tool suite, the real issue will be whether organizations are willing to give up on eclectic, entrenched, and possibly best-of-breed individual tools, to gain the advantages of a comprehensive approach. There are no green-field accounts in this respect and it seems like it would be a long sales cycle.
