Taking IT Out of the Salesforce.com Equation

Michael Vizard

While it usually doesn't require IT people to set up many of the software-as-a-service applications, integrating them with other applications can suck up all kinds of IT time and resources.

In an ideal world, SaaS applications should easily integrate with other applications with little to no IT intervention. That's the thinking behind a new Jitterbit Connect for Salesforce.com offering designed to require no coding to actually implement.

According to Jitterbit CTO Ilan Sehayek, the fundamental flaw with integrating applications such as Salesforce.com with the rest of the enterprise is trying to impose complex middleware platforms on top of SaaS applications that were never intended to be integrated with those types of architectures.

In contrast, Sehayek said Jitterbit has created a version of its lightweight middleware software designed to plug in to the Salesforce.com environment. The interface mimics the rest of the Salesforce.com environment and is specifically designed to be invoked by the Salesforce.com administrator or a business analyst.

Sehayek also notes that one of the reasons that Salesforce.com applications wind up being silos of data in many small to medium businesses is because while these companies have adopted SaaS applications in droves, they don't have the technical expertise to integrate them.

Sehayek declined to say whether Jitterbit will be applying the same type of integration strategy to other SaaS applications at the moment. But chances are good that if enough customers ask Jitterbit for help, something could be worked out.

The Salesforce.com Connect comes standard with the enterprise edition of Jitterbit.
