IBM today announced that it has acquired OpenPages, a provider of a platform for managing governance, risk management and compliance (GRC), for an undisclosed sum. The most surprising thing about this acquisition might not be the deal itself, but what IBM intends to do with OpenPages.
According to Peter Griffiths, IBM vice president of business analytics development, OpenPages will become part of IBM's portfolio of business analytics software. Griffiths says internal and external business stakeholders are demanding an orchestrated and repeatable approach to analyzing the risk factors to the business.
He said IBM plans to combine OpenPages with the analytics software from Cognos, SPSS and other elements of the IBM portfolio to develop a complete set of risk analytics offerings.
IBM has worked closely with OpenPages in the past. In fact, OpenPages resells reporting and analytics tools developed by Cognos. But with all the focus these days on sustainability of business operations, Griffiths says IBM is responding to the need for much tighter coupling of analytics and GRC in an age where everybody wants much greater visibility into business operations.
