While there is a lot of potential value associated with the Hadoop data management framework, getting a Hadoop implementation up and running has never been all that easy. To address this issue, Dell and Cloudera, a provider of an Apache Hadoop distribution and associated management tools, announced this week that they are working together to deliver a Hadoop platform that customers can deploy in a couple of hours.
The Dell Cloudera Solution for Apache Hadoop platform bundles Cloudera's Apache distribution with the chief IT automation tools from OpsCode and an OpenStack installation tool from Dell called Crowbar on a Dell PowerEdge C Series server. According to Joseph George, director of marketing for Dell cloud and data solutions, this reduces the time it takes to deploy Hadoop down to a single day. Previously, the average IT organization would have spent day and weeks accomplishing the same task.
According to Ed Albanese, Cloudera vice president of business development, the Dell Cloudera Solution for Apache Hadoop is currently the only end-to-end platform available for Hadoop today. There are, however, other approaches based on deploying what amounts to a Hadoop software appliance.
Why all this matters is that the complexity of Hadoop has been a factor in terms of spurring its adoption. While there's no doubt at this point that there is a lot of interest in Hadoop, IT organizations these days are a little wary of anything that isn't easy to deploy and manage.
At the same time, however, there are a lot of departments in the business that are anxious to start experimenting with Hadoop applications, and they want the IT department to get out of the way of allowing that to happen as quickly as they can.
