Six Unified Communications Application Benefits

UC users experience both time and financial savings.

Toshiba America has announced the addition of the IPedge EP IP telephone system that the company says is designed for businesses with up to 40 users per server. The new appliance complements the existing IPedge family on the lower end of the rung, which at the moment consists of the IPedge EC with support for up to 200 users per server and the IPedge EM, which is designed with up to 1,000 users per server in mind.

Powered by the Linux operating system, the IPedge EP integrates multiple communication applications such as call processing, voicemail, native SIP line and SIP trunk support into a single platform for ease of deployment and cost savings. The centralized system administration also translates into ease of management, while inherent networking capabilities allow for integration with other IPedge appliances or Toshiba's Strata CIX systems.

Other optional, but powerful, capabilities include unified messaging and meet-me audio conferencing with dial-in audio conferencing. Web collaboration with Outlook calendar integration, desktop sharing and conference recording are other features that businesses would desire, as with built-in support for Toshiba's wireless IP phones as well as the company's SoftIPT softphone client - it is understood that both can be used over wireless LAN or the mobile cellular network. As reported by Channel Partners, Toshiba's Call Manager application makes it possible for users to click on their laptop or tablet PCs to dial, answer and transfer calls. Indeed, users can manage their own telephones, using a browser to personalize telephone functions or even reprogramming buttons.

One particular feature that caught my eye is the ability to deploy the IPedge EP as a standalone appliance or as a "member" of an IPedge EC or IPedge EM configured as the primary node. This gives smaller businesses the flexibility to redeploy their investments instead of simply discarding the IPedge EP as they outgrow it.

Brian Metherell, vice president and general manager of Toshiba America Information Systems, Telecommunication Systems Division, says of the IPedge EP:

With Toshiba's IPedge EP single server solution, small businesses can empower their users to communicate more effectively, be more cost effective, and have greater access to their customers, partners and each other.

Toshiba says that the IPedge is designed using open standards for the long term, and should be compatible with future endpoint devices built on the same standards.

The IPedge EP is now available from authorized Toshiba dealers nationwide.
