Dell Unveils Vostro Laptops for SMBs

Dell last week unveiled a new family of Vostro laptops that is based on Intel's third-generation microprocessor. The Vostro 3360 is a 13-inch laptop in a slim 0.76-inch form factor packed with mainstream performance for the traveling professional. The Vostro 3460 and 3560 are 14-inch and 15-inch offerings that cater towards more demanding business needs.

Overall, the new Dell Vostro laptop offerings are designed squarely with business users in mind. This is evident based on the business-centric capabilities that are bundled as standard features included to enhance the laptop's resilience against wear and tear, as well as on the security front.

For example, each laptop in the series comes equipped with a spill-resistant keyboard and a free-fall sensor to help reduce damage to the hard disk drive. Fingerprint readers are also present for easy security, which works together with the preloaded DigitalPersona File Protection software for file and folder encryption. This is pertinent for SMBs as only the Enterprise and Ultimate versions of Windows 7 come with built-in BitLocker full-disk encryption, while the laptops are only available in Windows 7 Home Premium and Professional. Moreover, Trend Micro security software is also present to ensure that critical data is securely protected.

"The Vostro product family enables emerging businesses to grow and thrive in competitive environments," says Sam Burd, vice president of Dell's Personal Computing Product Group in a statement. "Our end-to-end solution is the reason why so many of our Vostro customers recommend the products to their friends, family and colleagues."

In terms of connectivity, the laptops also come with a large array of standard ports that can be used without dongles, such as a Gigabit Ethernet port, a VGA port, an HDMI port and an 8-in-1 card reader. The laptops also come with an HD webcam with an integrated dual-digital-array microphone and at least two USB 3.0 ports each. For expansion, the 3460 and 3560 also come with a 34mm Express Card slot.

And as you would expect, all three models support Intel Rapid Start and Smart Response technologies when equipped with an optional 32GB mSATA SSD (solid-state drive). Rapid Start is geared towards enabling faster boot-up and hibernate response time, while Smart Response caches the most frequently used files and applications onto the SSD for much quicker access speeds.

According to Dell, the Vostro 3560 has a starting price of $599 and is available now. The Vostro 3360 and Vostro 3460 are priced starting at $649 and $599 and will be available from 21 June. The new Vostro laptops are available in Aberdeen Silver, Brisbane Bronze and Lucerne Red colors.
