Social Media Authors Go In-Depth on New Communication Tools

Valuable insight on incorporating social media and Web 2.0 applications into business communications.

Our Knowledge Network contributors have uploaded several resources in the past few weeks to assist other IT decision-makers in their quest to maintain quality, consistency and compliance when it comes to organizational social-networking initiatives.

Health care service provider Sutter Health and Cleveland Clinic, a non-profit medical center, provided these guidelines and policy documents that you can use to develop your own rules and strategies for leveraging the communicative power of Web 2.0:

  • Policy for Social Networking and Other Web-based Communications - Use this policy to keep online communication on behalf of the organization in compliance with existing standards and applicable laws, as well as distinguish employees' personal online activities from professional communications.
  • Guidelines for Participation in Online Communities - This document includes rules for interacting online as a representative of a healthcare organization, protecting patient health information and creating quality content.
  • Cleveland Clinic Social Media Policy- Applicable to all employees who refer directly or indirectly to the clinic, this policy includes age requirements for posting on behalf of the organization, restrictions that apply to posting medical information and rights and responsibilities for social media participants.

If you're an IT manager developing social media rules for your organization or department, especially in health care, these policies and guidelines can speed up the process. Use these samples as a basis for your own; you don't have to start from scratch.
