Stocking up on Tiered Storage

Patrick Avery

The Knowledge Network has provided users with three Data Center Calculators so far: one on Comatose Servers, one on Scheduled Server Power-Downs, and one on Server Virtualization. IT Business Edge contributor Michael Stevens has completed the fourth and final calculator in this series, Tiered Storage Savings Calculator, and has uploaded it to the Knowledge Network.

This calculator gives a quick approximation of your savings opportunity if you switch from your current storage deployment to a more rigorous tiered approach. Tiered storage is the assignment of different categories of data to different types of storage media in order to reduce total storage cost, an effective way to improve network efficiency. Categories may be based on levels of protection needed, performance requirements, frequency of use and other considerations. Since assigning data to particular media may be an ongoing and complex activity, some vendors provide software for automatically managing the process based on a company-defined policy.
