SaaS Provider Opens Seattle Office If Ferry Commute Doesn't Float Your Boat

Susan Hall

I've written before about the challenges of recruiting in areas such as Amarillo, Texas, and Detroit. It can be hard to make jobs there sound attractive.

The problem for Avalara, which offers Web-based tax management software, is the commute. The 200-person company on Bainbridge Island, Wash., wants to add 240 more. And it's looking to Seattle and environs to do so, according to Geekwire. Only Puget Sound stands between them. As a commute, though, I'd call it one of the most beautiful around.

There is the time and expense of commuting on Washington State Ferries-and you'd pay extra for Wi-Fi, that is if you insist upon using that time for work.

While the company is planning to move to a larger facility near the main ferry dock on Bainbridge Island, it has also opened an office in downtown Seattle with space for about 15 workers for those who want to avoid the one-hour sailing time each way.
