Don't Forget to Thank Your Sysadmin

Susan Hall

It's Sysadmin Day, an unofficial holiday to thank those in a thankless job. If nothing else this Friday, those folks deserve to leave early.

The idea began as a joke, but apparently has grown wildly popular in other parts of the world, notably Russia where folks go off into the woods and celebrate a la Burning Man, according to Network World.

It has its own website, where you can find gift ideas and cartoons. And vendors have jumped on the bandwagon. Vendor SysAid has a clever, catchy song - no, we aren't getting any smarter - and QuorumLabs has an offer for a free pocket toolkit.

For employers trying to hang onto their talent, never underestimate the power of some public appreciation. Saying "thank you" could work wonders. A big, wet kiss isn't necessary.

Here's hoping IT Business Edge's unheralded hero, Mike Laun, and all his sysadmin brethren (and sistren) had a great and hassle-free day.
