Xyratex Taps Emulex SATA Bridge

Arthur Cole

Xyratex customers probably want to take note of the fact that they now have an easy way to deploy SATA drives to their 4 Gbps Fibre Channel networks.

The company recently incorporated the Emulex BR-2401 storage bridge across the RS-1602-F4-SBD (they really need to hire someone to come up with a catchier name) platform. The 2401 is an FC-to-SATA bridge capable of emulating Fibre Channel disk drives and allowing transparent use of SATA drives within the FC enclosure, simplifying the deployment of tiered storage environments.

SATA drives are one of the ways in which data centers can cut operating costs in that they require thinner cabling between server and storage, which improves air flow within the enclosure. You also get a faster transfer rate compared to a normal ATA drive, hot-swap capability and improved data integrity.

The deal marks a tighter development bond between the two companies. Xyratex already uses the Emulex InSpeed SOC 422 storage switch in the RS-1602 system as a means to provide point-to-point communications.
