Virtual SANs the Easy Way

Arthur Cole

It's getting even easier to deploy virtual storage now that appliance vendors are tapping into the power of the technology.

A case in point is Hifn, a California OEM that has reconfigured its Swarm iSCSI SAN appliance to work with the VMware ESX server and the QLogic QLA4852 iSCSI host-bus adapter, reports Fox Business. The combination provides a 7.5 TB SAN capable of handling up to five physical blades running multiple virtual machines.

The system can also run VMware's Vmotion live migration tool, which allows virtual machines to be moved from one server to another without losing availability or transactional data. The system also takes advantage of the Virtual Machine File System to allow concurrent shared file access from the Swarm appliance to multiple ESX installations.
