Now that server virtualization is moving hot and heavy into the mid-level and even small enterprise, the move is on to push storage virtualization down market as well.
And when you happen to be a small company yourself, what better way to approach the mid-market than by aligning with another small company? That's my guess behind a recent deal between Compellent Technologies and Virtual Iron.
The agreement brings together the Compellent's Storage Center modular storage solution and the VI virtualization platform to create a ready-made, end-to-end virtual infrastructure for the not-so-very large.
Compellent makes a good fit with VI because it can easily accommodate the large number of applications that run on Virtual Iron Infrastructure, and also provides advanced SAN features like automated tiered storage and thin replication.
It will be interesting to see what the true benefits virtualization will be now that it's heading into the mainstream.
