Sun Revs up Multi-Threading

Arthur Cole

Sun Microsystems is taking multi-threading on its server processors to a new level.

Teaming up with GigaSpaces, the company was able to push its Sparc Enterprise T5240 device to 1.3 million transactions per second. The test involved 60 concurrent clients, each of which sustained about 21,000 TPS, a 40 percent improvement over existing technology.

The set-up combined the T5240 running the third generation of the CoolThreads multi-threading system with GigaSpaces' eXtreme Application Platform to establish a "scalable in-memory data grid" that offers throughput and latency levels beyond anything that linear scalability can provide, according to Sun.

The 5240 is a dual-socket CMT device capable of delivering up to 128 threads.

Sun is gearing the system for the financial services sector in anticipation of increasing trade volumes.
