The Register had an interesting article on Tuesday offering a smattering of details about a hush-hush project at Sun called FISHworks. Apparently, it stands for Fully Integrated Software and Hardware, and it looks to be an attempt to steal some of NetApp's bread and butter by developing a simplified NAS device with cutting-edge Sun systems.
And storage may be only the beginning. If the thing takes off, it could lead to a whole line of networking and server devices.
One key question, though, is whether Sun has come up with a new approach to the appliance market, or is it simply porting the same old systems into a NAS device. The difference could mean the beginning of a new era at Sun, or another costly boondoggle.
