Sun's commitment to open designs on the company's new unified storage platform is already paying dividends. STEC announced this week that it will support the Sun Storage 7000 family with its ZeusIOPS and MACH8/IOPS SSDs.
The pairing brings together STEC's technology with Sun's Flash-friendly ZFS file system in a bid to move solid state into the multi-tiered storage realm. The 7000 should also make good use of Flash technology in its goal to deliver advanced features like replication, active clustering, compression and thin provisioning without boosting the price tag.
Both firms have vowed to maintain an ongoing working relationship once initial deployments are completed. Sun claims the open nature of the system provides an avenue to continued innovation and new services through a process of automated updates.
