Solarflare Loads Up New Silicon

Arthur Cole

Solarflare Communications has launched a pair of silicon solutions aimed at improving switch densities and dual-port server adapters even while they reduce the power these devices draw.

The new Xpress 10 SFT 9001 PHY is a single-chip 10GBASE-T transceiver designed to boost 1000BASE-T copper networks to 10 G connectivity. The device uses only half the power of previous three-chip devices and features multi-speed auto-negotiation down to 100 Mbps, so it can operate in legacy networks for enterprises that are pursuing asynchronous upgrade strategies.

The SolarStorm SFC4000E 10 GbE vNIC controller chip runs at only 2.2 watts, roughly 75 percent less than equivalent systems, while providing a 9.9 Gbps line rate performance running jumbo frames aboard Winders Server 2008. The unit features data digest offload to accelerate iSCSI storage, and provides application acceleration for virtual operating systems like ESX Server 3.5.
