SGI Enters the Warehousing Fray

Arthur Cole

SGI continues its transformation from 3-D graphics vendor to HPC platform provider with its new Adaptive Data Warehouse solution, which the company has designed for the Oracle Optimized Warehouse Initiative.

When tied to Oracle database software aboard the SGI Altix server and InfiniteStorage system, the ADW solution can scale from 4 to 300 TB and is said to offer a five-fold speed increase for ad-hoc queries, compared to existing warehouse platforms. The system can also scale its I/O performance to match the Altix server, which can scale I/O, CPUs and memory independently to suit business requirements.

The system can be configured with various entry points and growth paths to suit medium and large enterprises. The mid-range solution features an Altix XE 250 with an InfiniteStorage 220 system and Infiniband switching for up to 20 TB. The large system accesses an Altix 450 server to support up to 100 TB, while the ultra-large configuration uses the top-end Altix 4700 and IS 4600 to scale up to 300 TB.

SGI says it developed the system using technology originally designed for battlefield intelligence, energy exploration and weather modeling.
