RelData says it is kicking up the iSCSI performance of its mid-level unified disk arrays by combining 10 GbE connectivity with SAS drives, a match that reportedly nearly doubles the transfer rate of similarly priced Fibre Channel networks.
The company is claiming throughput at between 650 MBps and 700 MBps, compared to about 400 MBps that can be attained with 4 Gbps Fibre Channel.
The company says it can deliver a 1.75 TB SAS configuration for about $60,000, or, for the same price, a 9 TB SATA array. With the faster performance of the SAS drives, however, it makes sense to deploy SAS if you're planning to upgrade to 10 GbE in the near future.
After all, what good is a high-performance network if the hardware it's tied to doesn't push the envelope?
