Real-Time I/O from Moxa

Arthur Cole

Data acquisition and control applications are thriving on real-time I/O technology now coming available.

Moxa Technologies is the latest to tap into this market with the ioLogic E2210 Active Ethernet I/O server designed for open networks on either Modbus/TCP or Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), says Engineer Live.

The system differs from traditional Ethernet in the way it handles active messaging between the server and the data acquisition and control (DA&C) application. Normally, you'd need a host to poll the I/O server for status information. The Moxa system automatically transmits that data under the right I/O circumstances. As long as you're within predefined thresholds, network resources are free to do other things. It also boosts transmission times to real-time levels, on the order of 50 ms.

The Moxa system comes at the right time, with the growth of Ethernet connectivity in PC-based DA&C systems. Here's hoping that the company can expand it to other applications as well.
