QLogic Taps Solaris SAN Environments

Arthur Cole

Sun users could be on the verge of seeing SAN-based storage systems under the Solaris operating system now that a new line of Solaris-friendly host bus adapters is in the pipeline.

QLogic announced this week the introduction of target-mode capability for the OpenSolaris storage community on its SANblade HBAs, says CNNMoney.com. This should let third-party developers deliver Solaris-powered SAN connectivity using target mode applications.

The move is significant because more than 95 percent of Fibre Channel HBAs being used in Solaris environments come from QLogic. Opening up SAN connectivity adds another means for Sun users to shop around for leading-edge SAN applications, rather than relying solely on Sun.

And it's not a bad deal for open source developers as well, expanding access into what was a proprietary environment only a few short years ago.
